What a heat pump costs — the prices I publish

Most contractors will not put a number in front of you until someone is sitting at your kitchen table. Mine are published on my Google Business Profile, where anyone can read them without talking to me first. Every one of these is a “from” price:

What a published price cannot know is your house. A crawlspace you cannot stand up in, an electrical panel with no room left in it, ductwork that was marginal before and will not carry the airflow a heat pump needs, or an outdoor unit that has to sit round the far side of the building with the line set running the length of it. Any one of those moves the number. So there is no starting-at figure that quietly doubles once the work has begun: I look at the house, I write the number, and the number is the number.

If you want options you get good, better and best in writing, and I will tell you what the extra money actually buys — which on some jobs is nothing worth having. There is a 5% discount for active military, veterans and first responders, and financing is available.

What a heat pump costs in Everett specifically

Is a heat pump actually worth it in Washington?

For most houses around here, yes — and the reason is the shape of our weather rather than any single number on a brochure.

A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it, so a good system delivers several units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws. That advantage is at its largest in mild, damp, above-freezing weather, which is precisely what a Puget Sound winter is: months of forty-degree days with the heat running more or less continuously. A gas furnace only knows full blast and off, so it spends that entire season cycling. A heat pump spends it running slowly, which is both the efficient way to run and the reason the house sits at one temperature instead of swinging either side of the setpoint.

The second half of the answer is the part people forget: the same equipment is your air conditioning. Summers here are no longer the summers this housing stock was built for, and a heat pump means you are not buying a second appliance, a second outdoor unit and a second install to deal with August.

Where the answer is less clear-cut: a house on cheap natural gas with a furnace that still has years left in it. There a straight swap may not pay back the way the brochure suggests, and I will say so rather than sell it to you. That is what the heat-pump-ready coil further down this page is for.

Will a heat pump keep the house warm when it gets cold?

Yes. The equipment I install is cold-climate inverter equipment, rated to keep producing heat into negative temperatures. Western Washington does not get there.

The doubt is fair, because it used to be true. Heat pumps from twenty years ago shed most of their output as the outdoor temperature dropped, which is why so many Puget Sound houses ended up with electric strip heat bolted on behind them, and why plenty of people still remember a heat pump as the thing that ran all night and never really warmed the house.

Inverter equipment changed that. The compressor varies its speed rather than banging on and off, so it holds capacity much further down the temperature range and spends most of its life running slowly. If you want backup for the coldest handful of days a year anyway, that is a dual-fuel system — heat pump plus gas furnace, with the controls picking whichever is cheaper to run at that moment.

One thing worth asking of every quote you collect, mine included: get the rated heating capacity at 17°F and at 5°F. It is printed on the manufacturer's data sheet for whatever is being proposed. A contractor who will not show it to you has told you something useful.

Why a heat pump makes sense in Everett

Installation includes proper refrigerant charging, airflow balancing, and thermostat setup tuned for heat pump operation so you get the efficiency the equipment is rated for. We then walk you through running it correctly — heat pumps reward a 'set it and leave it' approach.

Repair and maintenance for every brand

Because a heat pump runs year-round, maintenance matters even more than on a seasonal system. We service all brands, addressing issues like refrigerant leaks, reversing-valve faults, defrost-control problems, low airflow, and failing capacitors. Annual or semi-annual tune-ups keep efficiency high and catch wear before it becomes a breakdown.

When the heat pump has already stopped

Most people do not read a page about heat pump installation because they are curious. They read it because something has failed, or is about to, and they are working out whether this is a repair or the start of a much larger conversation.

If the house is cold right now, that is the call to make first and the reading can wait. I answer my own phone from 7am to 8pm, seven days a week. I am not going to put a response window on a webpage — call and I will tell you honestly when I can actually be there, which is a more useful answer than a badge.

Four options, including the cheap one. That is the conversation, whether it starts as an emergency at nine on a Sunday morning or as a plan in September.

The heat-pump-ready middle option

If you are leaning towards a straight furnace replacement but you are not certain about the rest of it, there is a middle move most people have never been offered: put the heat-pump-ready A/C coil in at the same time as the furnace, from $1,435.

The indoor half is then already done. Whenever you decide to add the outdoor unit it is a smaller and cheaper job than doing the whole thing from scratch later, and you have not paid for a heat pump you were not ready to buy. It is on the published price list above for exactly that reason.

It is the move I would make in a house with a healthy furnace and a bad August.

Utility programmes and tax credits change, they turn on your exact address and on how your house is heated today, and a number typed here this month is worth nothing to you in February. The area I work in crosses two counties and more than one utility, so a programme that applied to a house I worked on last month may have nothing to do with yours.
